Tiah,
Being "dirt poor" is something I know about, since I recently returned from attending a major university in a foreign country I learnt the ways of living frugal.
I am back to my home state and the economy is bad, though, there is a lot of good coming from this; you have a chance to be rich with less, when economy is great everybody seeks jobs with benefits--and that is good if you need a paycheck--but if times are horrible, this great country of ours have opportunities for creation of bussines and make own wealth.
You are young and your college education will show you the "light" though you also have a wealth of experience-sharing paisanos, stay conected to the networks
